steepholm Island

SteepHolm is a small island in the Bristol Channel, five miles off Weston-super-Mare.

Its strategic military importance was recognised in the 19th century, and several gun emplacements can be seen around the cliffs.

It takes its name from the Danish word that means ‘river island’. The Danes used Steepholm as a strategic raiding base before some of these raiders then settled and traded, in and around South Wales and the West Country
